About the puzzles

Every puzzle on Point Paper was made for this site. None are copied from books, apps or other websites.

How they are made

Sudoku, star battle, takuzu and futoshiki grids come from our own generators. Each puzzle records the seed it came from, so it can be rebuilt and traced. Nonogram pictures were drawn by hand for the site; the ornament patterns come from a generator in the same way.

How they are checked

Before a puzzle is published, a program confirms that it has exactly one solution. A second program then solves it step by step using only explainable techniques, the same ones the hints use. A puzzle that can’t be finished that way is never published, which is why a hint is always available.

How difficulty is decided

Difficulty is the hardest technique the step-by-step solver needed, not the number of empty squares or the size of the grid.

  • Sudoku: Difficulty is the hardest technique our solver needed: singles for Gentle, up to X-wings and XY-wings for Fiendish.
  • Nonogram: Difficulty is how much reasoning a row or column needs, plus grid size: Easy lines settle one at a time, Hard ones need a short "what if" test or a large 15×15 grid.
  • Star Battle: Difficulty is the reasoning needed: Easy uses single squares and regions that fit in one line, Medium rules out squares that would block a region, Hard needs groups of regions that share rows or columns.
  • Takuzu: Difficulty is the rule you need most: pairs and gaps for Easy, counting for Medium, comparing whole lines for Hard.
  • Futoshiki: Difficulty is how far the signs must be followed: single signs for Easy, chains of signs and pairs for Hard.

Numbers and dailies

Each puzzle keeps its number for good, so links and printouts always point to the same grid. Published puzzles are never edited. The current schedule runs from 28 September 2026 to 26 November 2026; new puzzles are added before it ends.

In total there are 462 puzzles today: 110 sudokus, 88 nonograms, 88 star battles, 88 takuzus, 88 futoshikis.
